Brake System Sounds

- Clunking or thudding when braking: May indicate a loose caliper, a worn caliper bracket, or suspension components under braking load. Requires professional inspection.
- Scraping only in wet weather: Light surface rust on rotors after overnight moisture is normal and usually clears after a few stops. Persistent scraping warrants a look.
Wear Indicator
A small metal tab built into brake pads that contacts the rotor and produces a squeal when the pad material wears to a minimum safe thickness. It is intentionally designed to alert the driver.
Engine Knock (Detonation)
A condition where the air-fuel mixture in a cylinder ignites before the spark plug fires, creating a sharp knocking sound. Sustained detonation can damage pistons and rod bearings.
CV Joint
A constant velocity joint that transfers power from the drivetrain to the wheels while allowing for steering and suspension movement. Worn CV joints typically produce a clicking noise during turns.
Hydraulic Lifter

- Knocking or pinging under acceleration: Often called engine knock, this rhythmic tapping typically signals detonation — fuel igniting prematurely in the cylinder. It may result from low-octane fuel, carbon buildup, or a failing knock sensor. Persistent knock can damage pistons and bearings.
- Tapping or ticking at idle: Common causes include low oil pressure, worn valve train components, or a stuck hydraulic lifter. Check your oil level first. If the level is fine and the sound persists, have it diagnosed before driving further.
- Rattling on cold start that fades: Often a timing chain or tensioner that quiets once oil pressure builds. Should still be evaluated; a failing chain can cause catastrophic engine damage.
- Clicking that increases with vehicle speed: A clicking sound from the front wheels that intensifies in turns is a classic sign of a worn constant velocity (CV) joint on a front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle. CV joints are replaceable but should not be ignored.
